Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who recently passed away in December 2024 at the age of 100, is remembered for his profound contributions to peace and democracy worldwide. His legacy in Nepal is particularly significant, marked by his involvement in the country’s peace process during a tumultuous time.He operated the Carter Center, from the mansion of Maya Manor Boutique Hotel from 2004-2024 before it transitioned to a boutique hotel in 2015. 

The Carter Center’s Role in Nepal

The Carter Center, co-founded by Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter in 1982, began its operations in Nepal in 2004. The organization played a pivotal role in facilitating dialogue during Nepal’s tumultuous transition from conflict to peace. Carter’s visits to Nepal in 2007 and 2008 were instrumental in advocating for the inclusion of Maoist leaders in the political process, helping to steer the country toward a more democratic governance structure. 

During these visits, he met with key figures such as Maoist leaders Pushpa Kamal Dahal (Prachanda) and Baburam Bhattarai, emphasizing the importance of peaceful negotiation over violence. His efforts were crucial in persuading the Maoists to engage constructively with other political factions, ultimately leading to a more stable political environment.

Additionally, the Carter Wing boasts a state-of-the-art conference hall. called “The Durbar Hall”. This facility provides an excellent space for residential conferences.The conference hall fits 70-100 people in theatre style and has an attached bathroom.
