In 1935, Maya Manor was commissioned by Toran Shumsher Rana, the first Chief of Police of Nepal. The Ranas, an influential oligarchy that ruled Nepal for over a century (1846–1951), shaped much of the country’s history and architecture. During their reign, Kathmandu was closed to foreign visitors, and the Ranas sought to display their power and wealth through the construction of opulent palaces and mansions. These grand residences were heavily influenced by European architectural styles, particularly Neoclassical and Baroque, designed to impress their British counterparts in India and members of the Rana elite.
The palaces, including Maya Manor, were often referred to as “white elephants” due to their immense size and extravagant design. Set within vast landscaped grounds, they featured elegant French windows, towering Grecian columns, and spacious central courtyards traditionally used for religious and ceremonial gatherings. These properties not only reflected the Ranas’ political dominance but also their close ties with the British Empire, with whom they sought to maintain favorable relations during the colonial era.
After the fall of the Rana regime in 1951, Maya Manor was repurposed as the residence of the Chinese Ambassador for a decade. In the years that followed, the mansion was purchased by the family of Karna Sakya, the founder of the KGH Group, For decades, the Sakya family lived in this historic home, cherishing its architectural splendor and rich history.
In 2016, the family transformed Maya Manor into a boutique hotel, preserving its unique heritage while offering modern amenities and luxurious accommodations.
